WHEREAS, A native of Fall River, Massachusetts, Louis J. Bitar graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1958 before attending Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, where he majored in Industrial Management and received a Bachelor's Degree in 1962. Superintendent Bitar continued his education at Bridgewater State College and earned a Master's Degree in Education in 1965. He has since accumulated numerous hours of graduate study beyond his Master's Degree in School Administration; and
WHEREAS, Hired as a classroom teacher by the Tiverton School Committee in 1962, Louis J. Bitar served in this capacity until 1970, at which time he was appointed Principal of the Ranger-Nonquit Schools. Becoming the Assistant Principal of the new Tiverton Middle School in 1974, Mr. Bitar was one of the driving forces behind the construction of that school; and
WHEREAS, Louis Bitar became the Principal of the Tiverton Middle School upon the retirement of Miss Margaret A. Donnelly. Opening its doors in 1976, the Tiverton Middle School educated all of the town's fifth through eighth graders in a modern complex designed to facilitate the process of education. Implementing the middle school philosophy involving the team concept, interdisciplinary learning, a media center and an activity program, this school has been the recipient of numerous honors over the years; and
WHEREAS, Becoming the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1990 while serving under Esther Campbell, Louis Bitar became the Superintendent of Schools in Tiverton in 1994. Faced with the realities of budget cuts during his tenure as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent, Mr. Bitar has, nevertheless, guided the school system in such a way as to provide excellent educational opportunities for all of the town's students; and
WHEREAS, Louis Bitar is a past member of the Tiverton Education Association and the Rhode Island Principals' Association, and is a current member of the Rhode Island Superintendents' Association; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Superintendent of Schools in Tiverton, Louis J. Bitar, on his retirement. The Senate, moreover, wishes Louis, his wife, Emily, and their family continued happiness, success and fulfillment now that they will have more time to be together; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to retiring Superintendent of Schools in Tiverton, Louis J. Bitar.
