S E N A T E  R E S O L U T I O N
RECOGNIZING THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE E.G. ROBERTSON SCHOOL IN THE CITY OF WARWICK

WHEREAS, The E.G. Robertson School, known historically as Nausauket School, was built in 1949, and was the City of Warwick's first post-World War II modern school; and

WHEREAS, A one-story, flat-roofed brick structure following an E-shaped plan, with its wings running away from Nausauket Road, the E.G. Robertson School's most noteworthy feature is a central portico of rusticated piers, flanked by medallions depicting the eastern and western hemispheres of the globe; and

WHEREAS, Designed by S. Wesley MacConnell of Warwick, the Nausauket School served as a prototype for schools across the nation. Featured in the January, 1947 issue of The Nation's Schools magazine, the school is historically important for its reflection of the changing perspectives of the city, state and nation following World War II, as the country began to recognize that its educational system was preparing students for an expanding role in a rapidly changing world; and

WHEREAS, As open to change as ever, the E.G. Robertson School continues to grow with the community it serves. The school yard and playground have been enhanced, and a new addition, the all-purpose room, was added to the original structure in 1996; and

WHEREAS, The Warwick Historic District Commission, also in 1996, recognized the E.G. Robertson School by including it in the City's Plaque Program as one of Warwick's important municipal historic buildings; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby joins the City of Warwick in recognizing the historical significance of the E.G. Robertson School. A structure whose cutting-edge architecture reflected the growing optimism and awareness of a people emerging into a greater understanding of themselves and their place in the modern world, the E.G. Robertson School is a living monument to humanity's unquenchable thirst for knowledge and endless desire to meet new challenges; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the principal, faculty and students of the historic E.G. Robertson School in Warwick.
