WHEREAS, Born in Pawtucket on November 10, 1940, a son of Leonard J. and Rita F. Duckworth, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. attended East High on Exchange Street and Pawtucket Vocational High School on Broadway. Earning his Electronic Technician Certificate in March of 1970 at Rhode Island Radio & Electronic, Leonard went on to study at Johnson and Wales, where he graduated with an Associate Degree in Business; and
WHEREAS, A member of the Pawtucket Boys' Club and an enthusiastic Little Leaguer, Leonard Duckworth enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 23, 1958 and served with the Air Traffic Control and Early Warning Squad in Morocco before receiving his Honorable Discharge from the service on July 20, 1962; and
WHEREAS, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. worked for the Pawtucket Times, the Providence Journal, E.A. Adams Furniture, the Douglas Young Company, and General Dynamics before joining the United States Postal Service on March 23, 1966; and
WHEREAS, Appointed a Career Regular Carrier in September of 1969, Leonard was promoted to the position of Supervisor of Station/Branch Operations at the Lincoln Post Office in February of 1979. From March to December of 1979, he served intermittently as the Acting Branch Manager at the Lincoln, Ashton and Cumberland offices; and
WHEREAS, Promoted to the position of Superintendent of Station/Branch Operations at the Darlington Post Office in April of 1980, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. provided invaluable service in that capacity until becoming the Manager of the Cumberland Post Office in February of 1985. Retiring on August 2, 1996, after 30 years of exceptional leadership and service, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. earned numerous letters and certificates of appreciation throughout his career for his superb work; and
WHEREAS, A distinguished member of the Knights of Columbus, Delaney Council #57, since May 17, 1965, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. was elected and served as Grand Knight from 1974 to 1975, and served as Public Relations Director for the State Council of the Knights of Columbus from 1975 to 1976; and
WHEREAS, A volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, Leonard Duckworth, Jr. served as his Troop's Committee Secretary from 1974 to 1977. The Co-Chairman of the Rhode Island State Convention of the National Association of Letter Carriers in 1977, Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. is also a former National President of the NACC; and
WHEREAS, Joining the Pawtucket Lodge of Elks in June of 1979, Leonard Duckworth, Jr. has earned the admiration and respect of his fellow Lodge brothers through his abiding efforts to promote the interests of the Lodge and its grateful members. He has chaired or co-chaired a number of important committees, and enthusiastically served on many others. His leadership has proven invaluable; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby joins Pawtucket Lodge No. 920 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in recognizing Brother Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr. for his innumerable contributions to that fine organization, and congratulates this fine gentleman on being honored as "Elk of the Year for 1995-1996."; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Brother Leonard J. Duckworth, Jr.
