H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING DR. EDWARD J. MYERS ON HIS RETIREMENT AS SUPERINTENDENT OF THE CRANSTON PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

WHEREAS, The proper goal of education has always been to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives, while helping them to realize their potentialities. Education in America has also traditionally represented our major hope for improving the individual and society, and if it is true that our schools are the keys to opening the doors of opportunity, then it is absolutely essential that they also equip our people to walk confidently through those all-important portals; and

WHEREAS, For nearly thirty-five years, Dr. Edward J. Myers, both as a classroom teacher and as an administrator, has devoted his enthusiasm, experience and considerable leadership ability to realizing the potential in generations of children in the Cranston Public School System. Dr. Myers has consistently utilized his impressive academic credentials -- Bachelor of Arts - Providence College; Master of Education - Rhode Island College; CAGS - Rhode Island College; and Doctor of Education - Boston University -- to guide him in offering the finest educational opportunities to Cranston's young scholars; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Myers began his distinguished career in education with the Cranston Public Schools when he joined the staff of Hugh B. Bain Jr. High School as a teacher of American History in September 1962, remaining at Bain until he became an elementary guidance counselor in 1965; and

WHEREAS, Becoming Counselor/Coordinator for the Cranston Public Schools of the State Compensatory Guidance Program at the elementary level in 1968, Dr. Myers was named Supervisor of Special Services in 1977, a position he held with distinction until 1987, when his splendid efforts led to his being appointed Director of Pupil Personnel Services; and

WHEREAS, On Friday, September 13, 1991, Dr. Myer's innovative professional career in education earned him the highest accolade of the Cranston School Committee -- his appointed as Superintendent of the Cranston Public Schools; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby offers its sincere congratulates to Dr. Edward J. Myers on his retirement as Superintendent of the Cranston Public School System. Ever cognizant that education exists to make students aware of what was and what is, to incite them to probe into what may be, and to teach them to comprehend, evaluate and communicate, Dr. Edward J. Myers has helped to enrich the minds of thousands of grateful students in Cranston and prepared them for a future ripe with challenges and untold possibilities. He was clearly earned the unqualified admiration and respect of the entire membership of this House of Representatives; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Edward J. Myers.
