1 | WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous |
2 | system, affecting 2.9 million people worldwide, approximately one million people in the United |
3 | States and 2,319 adults in the State of Rhode Island; and |
4 | WHEREAS, According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the disease generally |
5 | strikes people in the prime of life, between the ages of 20 through 50. The cause and course of the |
6 | often debilitating symptoms of MS remain unknown and no cure currently exists; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been committed for 79 years to |
8 | a world free of MS, heightening public knowledge about and insight into the disease; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Since 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been a driving force |
10 | of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatments and a cure, and has invested more |
11 | than $1 billion in groundbreaking research; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Funds raised through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fuel $50.2 |
13 | million dollars of funding for more than 380 research projects at the best medical centers, |
14 | universities and other institutions throughout the United States and abroad, leading to many |
15 | breakthroughs in the treatment of MS; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Stopping MS in its tracks, restoring what has been lost, and ending MS |
17 | forever is the mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and one that all Americans and |
18 | Rhode Islanders should support; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |

1 | recognizes the importance of finding the cause and cure of MS and expresses its appreciation for |
2 | the dedication that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has shown toward creating a world |
3 | free of MS; and be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That this House hereby recognizes May 30, 2025, as “World MS Day” in |
5 | the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Peter Porrino, Chairman of the Board, |
8 | National Multiple Sclerosis Society. |
