S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING MR. LEMON ON 50 YEARS OF TANTALIZING THE TASTE BUDS

OF RHODE ISLANDERS ACROSS THE STATE

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lemon, a favored summertime refresher, has been delighting citizens

and visitors to the State’s capital for five decades, with generations of loyal Rhode Island

customers lining up each summer to enjoy a frozen Mr. Lemon; and

     WHEREAS, Eileen Rao, known affectionately as Mama Lemon, together with her

husband Joseph, opened the one and only family-owned Mr. Lemon in 1974, on Hawkins Street

in the City of Providence. Sadly, the founders have passed but their three children have taken on

the business and are continuing the legacy; and

     WHEREAS, Over the years, the original iconic frozen lemonade treat branched out,

expanding their offerings with a variety of rotating flavors including grape, apple, vanilla, lime

Rickey, Margarita, watermelon, guava, and the ever-popular Tutti Fruiti, to name just a few of the

eclectic choices; and

     WHEREAS, As a tribute at the passing of the company’s favorite local Senator, the

Honorable Maryellen Goodwin, Mr. Lemon renamed her favorite flavor, Smackin Apple, into

Majority Whip Goodwin; and

     WHEREAS, Ever-so-smooth and made with a refreshing level of sweetness, Mr.

Lemon’s slushy delights on a hot summer day are a Rhode Island staple and eminently deserving

of our recognition and gratitude; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby congratulates and

thanks Mr. Lemon on 50 years of delighting the taste buds of Rhode Islanders and lucky visitors

to our State. We moreover wish them many continued years of success serving the public; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Janice Valedofsky, Colleen Rao-Sales, and

Joseph Rao, Jr.
