PROCLAIMING MAY 28, 2024, TO BE "ARTS ADVOCACY DAY" IN THE STATE OF

RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The arts enhance and enrich the lives of every Rhode Islander and many

2

visitors to the State; and

3

     WHEREAS, The arts sector adds $2.37 billion to Rhode Island’s economy; and

4

     WHEREAS, The arts account for 3.25 percent of Rhode Island’s GDP and generates $23

5

million in annual State and local tax revenue; and

6

     WHEREAS, In addition to ensuring that Rhode Island maintains its reputation as an

7

outstanding arts and cultural destination and key hub, the events generated by the arts sector bring

8

audiences to our city and town centers and fill our restaurants and shops; and

9

     WHEREAS, Arts education programs offered during and after school enhance the quality

10

of education being offered annually to the benefit of thousands of children, teenagers and adults;

11

and

12

     WHEREAS, Unfortunately, data reveals that art and culture continue to be two of the top

13

sectors suffering from the shutdown due to the pandemic; now, therefore be it

14

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims May 28,

15

2024, to be “Arts Advocacy Day” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate, in an effort to avoid the shuttering of programs, urges all

17

of the people of the State of Rhode Island to recognize, applaud, appreciate and support the many

18

gifts all of our State’s arts and cultural assets gives to our community on a daily basis; and be it

19

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts

3

(RISCA) and the Rhode Island Coalition for the Arts.
