S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

DECLARING MAY OF 2024 TO BE "BRAIN TUMOR AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, An estimated one million Americans are currently living with brain and

2

other nervous system tumors; and

3

     WHEREAS, Approximately 25,400 people will receive a malignant brain tumor

4

diagnosis in 2024, and an estimated 18,760 people will die from this cancer in 2024 alone; and

5

     WHEREAS, Brain and other nervous system cancer is the ninth leading cause of cancer

6

death in the United States; and

7

     WHEREAS, The relative survival rate in the United States for all people following

8

diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor is only 33.4 percent, with the deadliest and most common

9

form of brain cancer, Glioblastoma, having an average survival length of approximately one year;

10

and

11

     WHEREAS, The treatment of brain tumors present significant challenges because of the

12

brain’s uniquely complex and fragile nature; and

13

     WHEREAS, Brain tumors can have lasting and life-altering physical, cognitive, and

14

psychological impacts on a person’s life; and

15

     WHEREAS, Brain tumors affect the primary organ in the human body that controls not

16

only cognitive ability, but the actions of every other organ and limb in the body, leading to brain

17

tumors being described as a disease that affects the whole individual; and

18

     WHEREAS, Daunting obstacles remain to the development of new treatments, and no

19

strategies for the screening or early detection of brain tumors exist; and

     WHEREAS, A need for greater public awareness of brain tumors exists, including

2

awareness of the difficulties associated with research on brain tumors and the opportunities for

3

advances in research and treatment; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes the

5

importance of awareness and the urgent need for further research into brain tumors and does

6

hereby declare May of 2024 to be “Brain Tumor Awareness Month” in the State of Rhode Island;

7

and be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mr. Ram Subramanian, Chair, and Mr. Ralph

10

DeVitto, President & CEO, of the American Brain Tumor Association.
