S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 5TH THROUGH MAY 11TH OF 2024, TO BE "TARDIVE

DYSKINESIA (TD) AWARENESS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Many people living with serious mental illnesses (for example, bipolar

2

disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder) or

3

gastrointestinal disorders (for example, gastroparesis, upset stomach, nausea and vomiting) may

4

be treated with medications that work as dopamine receptor blocking agents, including

5

antipsychotics and antiemetics; and

6

     WHEREAS, While ongoing treatment with these medications can be necessary,

7

prolonged use is associated with tardive dyskinesia (TD), an involuntary movement disorder that

8

is characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal and repetitive movements of the face, torso, limbs,

9

and fingers or toes; and

10

     WHEREAS, Even mild symptoms of TD can impact people physically, socially and

11

emotionally; and

12

     WHEREAS, It is estimated that TD affects approximately 600,000 people in the United

13

States, and approximately 65 percent of people with TD have not been diagnosed, making it

14

important to raise awareness about the symptoms; and

15

     WHEREAS, It is important that people taking these medications be monitored for TD by

16

a healthcare provider. Regular screening for TD is recommended by the American Psychiatric

17

Association; and

18

     WHEREAS, Clinical research has led to approval of treatments for adults with TD by the

19

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and recognition and treatment of TD can make a positive

impact in the lives of many people experiencing psychotic and mood disorders; and

2

     WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island needs to do all it can to raise awareness of TD

3

among the public and medical community; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims May 5th

5

through May 11th of 2024, to be "Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Week" in the State of

6

Rhode Island; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby encourages anyone experiencing uncontrollable,

8

abnormal and repetitive movements to consult their healthcare provider regarding their

9

symptoms; and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Karla Kiriako, Director, State Government

12

Affairs-East, Neurocrine, Inc.
