EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF CAROL F. DOHERTY, RN | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Carol F. |
2 | Doherty, RN, of Cumberland and formerly of Taunton. Mrs. Doherty was the beloved wife of the |
3 | late Dr. Edward J. Doherty, DDS, who had a thriving dental practice in Attleboro for many years; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, Born in Taunton, Carol Doherty was the daughter of the late Taunton Police |
6 | Detective John Flynn and the late Margaret Flynn. She was the sister of the late John Flynn; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Doherty was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and the Morton |
8 | School of Nursing. She studied at the graduate level at Boston University, Simmons College and |
9 | McGill University and had a long and distinguished career as a nurse, working at Boston City |
10 | Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital and other hospitals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She |
11 | was a contributing member of the World Health Organization and saved numerous lives during |
12 | the polio epidemic thanks to her training in the use of the iron lung; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Doherty leaves behind her children, retired Wrentham District Court |
14 | Clerk-Magistrate Edward Doherty and his wife, Joanne, and Colonel Brendan Doherty, retired |
15 | Rhode Island State Police Superintendent, and his wife, Michele. She was predeceased by her |
16 | son, Christopher Doherty, co-owner of the 19th Hole Tavern in Hyannis. Mrs. Doherty is also |
17 | survived by her grandchildren, Matthew Doherty and his wife, Kristin, Christine Ehlers, RN, and |
18 | her husband, Dan, Shelby Matzell and her husband, Evan, and Kaitlin Wirth and her husband, |
19 | Jonathan, and her great-grandchildren, Brayden, Jack and Quinn Doherty, Adalyn, Lucy and Rose |
20 | Ehlers, Ryan and Cavan Matzell, and Joseph and Molly Wirth; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Doherty was a hard-working woman who always put her family first in |
2 | her life and strove daily to provide for her loved ones. She was kind and generous but was also |
3 | strong and determined. At the age of 93, she defeated the COVID-19 Virus and did so again at a |
4 | later date. Mrs. Doherty was a shining star whose beacon burned brightly within the lives of her |
5 | family and many friends, and she will forever be remembered in the hearts and minds of all who |
6 | knew and loved her; now, therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby expresses its deepest |
8 | condolences on the passing of Carol F. Doherty; and be it further |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
10 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Edward Doherty and Colonel Brendan Doherty. |
