RELATING TO EDUCATION -- HEALTH AND SAFETY OF PUPILS | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 16-21 of the General Laws entitled "Health and Safety of Pupils" is |
2 | hereby amended by adding thereto the following section: |
3 | 16-21-42. Diabetes informational material. |
4 | (a) The department of education (RIDE), in consultation with the department of health, |
5 | shall develop type 1 diabetes informational materials for the parents and guardians of students. The |
6 | informational materials shall be made available to each school district, charter school and mayoral |
7 | academy through RIDE's website. The informational materials shall be provided in a multilingual |
8 | format set forth in at a minimum, the three (3) most common foreign language used by the parents |
9 | of public school students. |
10 | (b) On and after January 1, 2025, the governing board of each school district and governing |
11 | body of a charter school and mayoral academy, shall make the type 1 diabetes informational |
12 | materials accessible to the parent or guardian of every student when the student is first enrolled in |
13 | elementary school. |
14 | (c) Information provided to parents and guardians pursuant to this section may include, but |
15 | shall not be limited to, all of the following: |
16 | (1) A description of type 1 diabetes. |
17 | (2) A description of the risk factors and warning signs associated with type 1 diabetes. |
18 | (3) A recommendation regarding those students displaying warning signs associated with |
19 | type 1 diabetes that the parents or guardians of those students should immediately consult with the |

1 | student's primary care provider to determine if immediate screening for type 1 diabetes is |
2 | appropriate. |
3 | (4) A description of the screening process for type 1 diabetes and the implications of test |
4 | results. |
5 | (5) A recommendation that, following a type 1 diagnosis, parents or guardians should |
6 | consult with the student's primary care provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan, which |
7 | may include consultation with and examination by a specialty care provider, including, but not |
8 | limited to, a properly qualified endocrinologist. |
9 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
