EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF KATELYN MCCANNA | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the tragic passing of |
2 | Katelyn McCanna Vieira, the beloved wife of Milton Vieira, and our friend and colleague who |
3 | had served as Clerk of Senate Special Legislation and Veterans Affairs from 2016 through 2023; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, Katelyn was born in the City of Fall River, the cherished daughter of James |
6 | and Karen McCanna. She grew up spending idyllic days on what was affectionately known as |
7 | “Katelyn’s Beach” with her best friend and sister, Jaymie Naclerio, and dreamed of one day |
8 | becoming a teacher; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Upon graduation from St. Luke's School and LaSalle Academy, Katelyn |
10 | earned her Bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina University, and making her dream come true, |
11 | she began teaching kindergarten at Bishop McVinney. She later moved to Las Vegas to continue |
12 | her teaching career and obtain her Master’s degree from the University of Las Vegas; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Three years late, Katelyn returned to Rhode Island and her beloved family, |
14 | taking a position teaching in the Bristol Warren Regional School District, where she split her time |
15 | between Hugh Cole and Colt Andrews School. For the majority of her years teaching, she had |
16 | been a gifted and beloved kindergarten teacher, most recently at Hugh Cole School; and |
17 | WHEREAS, It was to the very good fortune of many a young student when they were |
18 | assigned to Katelyn’s kindergarten class. Her ability to open her student’s minds to the magic of |
19 | ideas, knowledge, and dreams, and find the very best in themselves was truly unparalleled; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In addition to her teaching and years at the State House, Katelyn was active |
2 | with various extracurricular activities and volunteering with myriad altruistic community service |
3 | initiatives; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Although Katelyn’s time with her beloved husband was sadly short, their |
5 | love was joyous and brought her an immeasurable abundance of happiness. In addition, Katelyn |
6 | also leaves behind her aunt and Godmother, Cathi Terry and husband, Uncle Ed, her Uncle John |
7 | Calitri and Auntie Kb, her cousins, Michael and Erin Terry and their children, Ben and Sierra |
8 | Terry and their son, Chris Calitri and wife, Katie, and Matthew Calitri, the Felag Boys, and many |
9 | aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The most fitting tribute to Katelyn McCanna Vieira is a celebration of her |
11 | life, a life in which each and every day was lived fully and joyfully embraced. She was fortunate |
12 | to have always enjoyed the total love and support of her family, and in return, she brightened and |
13 | enriched the lives of all around her. She will be dearly missed by not only her family and friends, |
14 | but also by the hundreds of young children whose lives she touched, and she will be forever |
15 | remembered; now, therefore be it |
16 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby extends deepest |
17 | sympathy and condolences on the passing of Katelyn McCanna Vieira; and be it further |
18 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
19 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Milton Vieira, James and Karen McCanna, and |
20 | Jaymie Naclerio and Family. |
