CELEBRATING THE 249TH BIRTHDAY OF THE U.S. ARMY

Kennedy, Tanzi, Fellela, Shallcross Smith, Felix, and Fogarty

     WHEREAS, Since its official birth on June 14, 1775, over a year before the Declaration

2

of Independence was written, the United States Army has played a vital role in the growth and

3

development of the American nation; and

4

     WHEREAS, The nature of the Army’s missions has varied depending on the nation’s

5

needs at a particular time, whether fighting a war for survival, developing a transportation

6

network and skilled engineers to support it, providing disaster relief, keeping the peace, or

7

supporting American diplomacy; and

8

     WHEREAS, From the first battles at Lexington and Concord to the streets of Mosul and

9

Kandahar, soldiers have always defended freedom and epitomized what is best about America;

10

and

11

     WHEREAS, Throughout our nation’s history, generations of brave men and women in

12

the U.S. Army have served with a deep commitment to America’s core values and beliefs, with

13

many making the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives so that we all would remain free; and

14

     WHEREAS, The brave soldiers of the U.S. Army remain Army Strong, the clearest

15

symbol of America’s commitment to freedom and the country’s preeminent leadership

16

experience, going beyond physical endurance and mental preparedness while encompassing an

17

indomitable spirit, and high ethical and moral values; now, therefore be it

18

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

19

congratulates the U.S. Army on the celebration of its 249th Birthday and honors the servicemen

20

and women who together make it the strength of our nation; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Christine Wormuth, Secretary of the U.S.

3

Army.
