RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE MEMBERS AND COACH OF THE | |
NORTH KINGSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL TEAM ON THEIR 1ST PLACE VICTORY AT THE | |
41ST RHODE ISLAND ACADEMIC DECATHLON | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Academic Decathlon was co-founded by John Howell, |
2 | publisher of the Warwick Beacon, in December of 1983, and is open to all public, private and |
3 | parochial high schools in Rhode Island; and |
4 | WHEREAS, This rigorous competition tests the brain power and overall knowledge and |
5 | thinking skills of high school entrants from across the state, in subject areas ranging from science |
6 | to art to math, as well as speech, interview, and essay writing; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Decathlon includes both a team competition component and awards |
8 | Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals to distinguish individuals for their outstanding achievements. |
9 | The 41st annual Rhode Island Academic Decathlon was held on March 3, 2024, at Bryant |
10 | University, with fifteen Rhode Island high schools competing. For the first time, North |
11 | Kingstown High School took home first-place honors; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Winning team members include: Lilian Borkman, Alice Dunning, Thea |
13 | Carr, Sydney Howell, Lucas Meier, Allana Trombley, Artur Porto, and Camdin Smith. The North |
14 | Kingstown team was superbly led by coach Susan Erikson; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The North Kingstown team also took first place in the Super Quiz, which is |
16 | part of the Rhode Island competition. Two North Kingstown seniors won gold medals, Lucas |
17 | Meier in Science and Artur Porto in Economics. North Kingstown also had the high honor of |
18 | representing Rhode Island in the United States Academic Decathlon held from April 25-27 in |
19 | Pittsburgh; and |

1 | WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize our youth and to celebrate their |
2 | accomplishments. The North Kingstown team members exemplify everything that young people |
3 | can achieve, and they are truly deserving of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
5 | congratulates the North Kingstown High School team and their coach for their victory at the 2024 |
6 | Rhode Island Academic Decathlon. We moreover wish them much happiness and success in all |
7 | their future endeavors; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
9 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Susan Erikson, Coach of the Decathlon |
10 | Team for North Kingstown High School. |
