EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MARGARET E. KANE | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with deepest sadness that this House has learned of the passing of |
2 | Margaret E. Kane. Born in Hornell, New York, she was the daughter of the late James "Ted" and |
3 | Louise Belle Kane, and the sister of the late James “Jimmy" Kane. She grew up in upstate New |
4 | York and later moved with her family to Bradenton, Florida, where she attended high school, and |
5 | is fondly remembered as being “the most sought-after classmate” at her class reunion; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Ms. Kane was a graduate of Florida State University, where she established |
7 | an outstanding athletic career, which eventually earned she and her teammates, certificates as |
8 | members of the first FSU women's team to be All-Americans for their accomplishments on the |
9 | 1969 Track and Field team; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Florida State University, Ms. Kane moved to Rhode |
11 | Island where she briefly taught in North Attleboro before beginning her long and illustrious |
12 | career with the American Lung Association in Rhode Island, ultimately rising to the position of |
13 | Executive Director; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Also active with the American Lung Association nationally, Ms. Kane was |
15 | a Past President of the Congress of Lung Association Staff (CLAS), and with a positive attitude, |
16 | passion and commitment to health, became very involved with supporting health education in |
17 | Rhode Island schools and public health awareness and advocacy; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Ms. Kane made her home in the Town of Barrington and became an integral |
19 | and contributing member of the community, serving as a member of the Republican Town |
20 | Committee, Chairperson of the Barrington Senior Services Advisory Board, and was involved |

1 | with many East Bay real estate firms. She was also very active in Providence Rotary, the |
2 | Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, was an alumna of Leadership Rhode Island, and served |
3 | as President of Operation Clean Government; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Ms. Kane was the cousin of Christine Caferelli and family, had many, many |
5 | friends from around the country and an extensive adopted family in the United Kingdom |
6 | including Jan Long and her beloved goddaughter, Annie Webb, and was a dear friend to her |
7 | Ogunquit and Wells, Maine, housemate of 47 years, the late Jean MacCorison, and Molly Clark |
8 | who was with her at the end; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Margaret Kane was a memorable personality and a good-hearted soul, who |
10 | was filled with wit and humor, an infectious laugh, and fabulous stories of silly and wild |
11 | escapades. She was a beloved and treasured friend to all who had the joy of being part of her life |
12 | and she is dearly missed and forever remembered; now, therefore be it |
13 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
14 | extends deepest condolences on the passing of Margaret E. Kane; and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Christine Caferelli and Family, Jan Long, |
17 | Annie Webb, and Molly Clark. |
