EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF D. RONALD DANIEL | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of D. Ronald |
2 | Daniel, beloved husband of Lise Scott, and the devoted father of David and his wife, Jeanne, |
3 | Peter and his partner, Jean Stratton, Stephen and his wife, Mary Beth, and his stepson, David |
4 | Scott and his wife, Chandra; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Mr. Daniel’s educational pedigree was |
6 | unparalleled. He attained his Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, his MBA from the |
7 | Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from |
8 | Harvard University, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Wesleyan, and an |
9 | Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel; and |
10 | WHEREAS, After honorably serving our country in the United States Navy, Mr. Daniel |
11 | joined McKinsey & Company, where “revered for his values, his collaborative spirit and his |
12 | mentoring to the women and men of the Firm” he rose to the position of Global Managing |
13 | Partner. In 1976, he led the firm’s management consultancy, and in 1988, after six decades, he |
14 | stepped down and was named Managing Director Emeritus; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Never one to remain idle, Mr. Daniel went on to serve as Treasurer of |
16 | Harvard University for 15 years, and was a member of the then seven-person Harvard |
17 | Corporation, a member of the University’s Board of Overseers, Chairman of the Harvard |
18 | Management Company, and Chairman of the Board of Fellows of Harvard Medical School; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. Daniel joined the Library of America’s board, and two years |
20 | later, became Board Chair, where his dedication and deep commitment to the organization’s |

1 | mission “to keep great American writing alive in the culture” generated and inspired a legacy of |
2 | unsurpassed generosity and support for LOA’s publishing program and purpose; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Daniel was also an active and contributing member of numerous |
4 | altruistic and community organizations including being a member of the Boards of Bloomberg |
5 | Philanthropies, the Library of America, the New York City Ballet, the Markel Foundation and the |
6 | National Trust for Historic Preservation. He also chaired the Investment Committee of the Peter |
7 | G. Peterson Foundation, served on the Investment Committees of The National Gallery of |
8 | London and The Rockefeller University, was a Trustee Emeritus of Rockefeller University and a |
9 | Life Trustee of WNET, and was a member of the Executive Committee of The Brookings |
10 | Institution, the Council on Foreign Relations, and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts |
11 | and Sciences; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Daniel was also an avid golfer. He was a member of Augusta National |
13 | Golf Club, The Blind Brook Club, The Links Club, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. |
14 | Andrews. In addition, he served as Vice President of the United States Golf Association, was a |
15 | member of the Executive Committee of the USGA, and was Chair of the organization’s Finance |
16 | Committee; and |
17 | WHEREAS, To his family and those who knew and loved Ron Daniel, and particularly |
18 | his ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who adored him, he was simply and lovingly |
19 | known as “Grandpa Cheese” or “The Big Cheese”, a nickname he surely earned through his |
20 | commanding achievements and enduring life, and he is, and will always be dearly missed; now, |
21 | therefore be it |
22 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
23 | extends deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the family and many friends of D. Ronald |
24 | Daniel; and be it further |
25 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
26 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Lise Scott, David Daniel, Peter Daniel, Stephen |
27 | Daniel, and David Scott. |
