1 | WHEREAS, Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men, |
2 | women, and most racial and ethnic groups; and |
3 | WHEREAS, In the United States, a person dies every 33 seconds of a heart attack and |
4 | someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Approximately 695,000 people in the United States died in 2021 from heart |
6 | disease, which represents one out of every five deaths occurring that year; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Annually, approximately 805,000 people in the United States suffer a heart |
8 | attack, with one in five of these incidents being silent heart attacks; and |
9 | WHEREAS, About one in twenty Americans have Coronary Artery Disease; and |
10 | WHEREAS, From 2018 to 2019, heart disease cost the United States approximately |
11 | $239.9 billion due to the cost of health care services, medicines, and loss of productivity; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Approximately 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in homes; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, In response to the heart disease crisis in the United States, the American |
15 | Heart Association, American Red Cross and the National Safety Council worked together to |
16 | create National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator Awareness |
17 | Week, which the United States Congress unanimously passed on December 13, 2007; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The purpose of National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated |
19 | External Defibrillator Week is to spotlight that more lives can be saved if more Americans learn |

1 | CPR and how to use an AED, better known as a defibrillator. Quite often, the person you save |
2 | will be a loved one; now, therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims June 1 to 7 |
4 | of 2023, to be "National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator |
5 | Week"; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the American Heart Association. |
