PROCLAIMING MAY OF 2023, TO BE "BRAIN TUMOR AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE | |
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, An estimated 700,000 Americans are living with a primary brain tumor, |
2 | with approximately 94,390 people who will receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis in 2023, and |
3 | an estimated 18,200 people who will die from a malignant brain tumor in 2023; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Brain tumors are the leading cause of death from cancer in children under |
5 | the age of 14, the leading cause of death from cancer for teens under the age of 19, the second |
6 | leading cause of death from cancer in young adults ages 15 to 39, and the sixth most common |
7 | cause of cancer related death among people ages 40 and over; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The relative survival rate in the United States for all people following |
9 | diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor is only 35.7 percent; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Brain tumors can have lasting and life-altering physical, cognitive, and |
11 | psychological impacts on a person's life; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The treatment of brain tumors present significant challenges because of the |
13 | brain's uniquely complex and fragile nature; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Daunting obstacles remain to the development of new treatments, and no |
15 | strategies for the screening or early detection of brain tumors exist; and |
16 | WHEREAS, A need for greater public awareness of brain tumors exists, including |
17 | awareness of the difficulties associated with research on brain tumors and the opportunities for |
18 | advances in research and treatment; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes the |

1 | importance of awareness and the urgent need for further research into brain tumors and hereby |
2 | proclaims May of 2023, to be "Brain Tumor Awareness Month" in the State of Rhode Island; and |
3 | be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
5 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mr. Ram Subramanian, Chair, and Mr. Ralph |
6 | DeVito, President & CEO, of the American Brain Tumor Association. |
