PROCLAIMING APRIL OF 2023, TO BE "FINANCIAL LITERACY MONTH" IN THE | |
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Every Rhode Islander deserves the opportunity to achieve financial security |
2 | and stability regardless of zip code or background; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Our financial system is increasingly complex and Rhode Islanders are |
4 | making personal finance decisions that have long-lasting consequences; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Too many Rhode Islanders continue to struggle with financial challenges at |
6 | a rate higher than regional and national peers; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Individuals with strong personal finance skills have the knowledge to make |
8 | informed decisions regarding budgeting, maintaining strong credit, saving, investing, and |
9 | protecting and insuring their assets; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In 2021, Rhode Island joined many other states in passing legislation to |
11 | guarantee that all public high school students have access to high-quality, standards aligned |
12 | personal finance education; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Government, private businesses, community-based organizations, and |
14 | institutions of education must continue to work together to empower consumers to make |
15 | informed decisions about their finances, appropriately plan for economic instability, and avoid |
16 | deceptive or predatory practices; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Strengthening the financial skills of all Rhode Islanders is an investment in |
18 | the fundamental promise of a brighter future and the building of a more prosperous nation; and |
19 | WHEREAS, April is National Financial Literacy Month, where Rhode Island highlights |

1 | its commitment to teaching ourselves and our children about the basics of financial education; |
2 | now, therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims April 2023, |
4 | to be “Financial Literacy Month” in the State of Rhode Island. We moreover urge all Rhode |
5 | Islanders to take advantage of various programs and activities that will increase their personal |
6 | financial literacy during both the month of April and throughout the year; and be it further |
7 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
8 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the RI JumpStart Coalition. |
