HONORING SENATOR DENNIS L. ALGIERE FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF | |
THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our good friend and colleague |
2 | Senator Dennis Algiere, who is retiring from the Rhode Island Senate, District 38, after thirty |
3 | years of devoted service to his constituents and the citizens of the State of Rhode Island; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Born and raised in the Town of Westerly, Dennis Algiere graduated from |
5 | Westerly High School, earned his Bachelor's degree from Providence College, a Master's degree |
6 | from Northeastern University, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Massachusetts School |
7 | of Law; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In 1990, the Honorable Dennis Algiere began his public service on the |
9 | Westerly Town Council, and in November of 1992, he successfully ran for the State Senate |
10 | District 26 seat, which in 2003 became District 38, representing constituencies in the Towns of |
11 | Westerly, Charlestown, and South Kingstown; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Respected and admired by his peers, Senator Algiere was appointed Senate |
13 | Deputy Minority Leader in 1995, and in 1997, was elected Minority Leader by the Republican |
14 | caucus, a position he has continuously held over the past twenty-five years. In his capacity as |
15 | Leader, he is an Ex Officio member of all Senate Committees; and |
16 | WHEREAS, During his tenure in the Senate, Leader Algiere has been a staunch advocate |
17 | for government reform, including the establishment of an Inspector General and the Julia Lynn |
18 | Cardinal Act. During the COVID pandemic, he also introduced legislation seeking to exempt the |
19 | first $10,200 of unemployment benefits from state taxes for out-of-work Rhode Islanders; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Consistently putting his District’s interests first, Leader Algiere has been |
2 | active with myriad boards and committees, including serving on the Board of Directors for Salve |
3 | Regina University and the Westerly Hospital, Chairman of the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park |
4 | capital campaign and building committee, Chairman of the Westerly Police Department building |
5 | committee, on the President's Advisory Council on the Arts at the John F. Kennedy Center and on |
6 | the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Dennis Algiere's leadership and tireless devotion to the |
8 | citizens of the Ocean State have earned him our unqualified admiration and respect, and he will |
9 | most assuredly be missed; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby honors Senator Dennis |
11 | Algiere as he concludes his service in the Rhode Island Senate. We thank him for a job well done, |
12 | and extend our sincere wishes for his continued health, happiness and success; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Dennis Algiere. |
