EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF | |
CHARLES ALBERT GREENE | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with deepest condolences that this House has learned of the passing of |
2 | Charles Greene. He was born in Exeter, on property known as “Town Farm”, and was the son of |
3 | the late William Greene and Vera Linear. He later married the love of his life, the late Evelyn |
4 | Greene, and lived the rest of his life in the home they built on South County Trail in Exeter; and |
5 | WHEREAS, As a youngster, Mr. Greene attended a one room schoolhouse known as |
6 | “Hall School” on Ten Rod Road, from the 1st grade through the 8th grade. At the age of 15, he |
7 | left school to work for the Turf Farm at the University of Rhode Island, and proceeded to |
8 | establish a reputation for himself as a hard-working and diligent worker. Over the years, he |
9 | worked tirelessly and strove daily to provide for his family and loved ones in numerous |
10 | occupations which included working at a dairy farm at the University of Rhode Island, driving a |
11 | milk truck for Wallace Foster, and later beginning his own successful construction business that |
12 | operated in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He even installed sod at Fenway Park at one time; |
13 | and |
14 | WHEREAS, Years later, Mr. Greene became a Road Supervisor for the Town of Exeter, |
15 | a position he held for many years, retiring in 1986. He supervised the building of the Town of |
16 | Exeter Highway Garage and the purchase of the Town’s first payloader; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Greene was always active in civic and community affairs. He was a past |
18 | member of the Kingston Fire Department and the Exeter Volunteer Fire Company #1, where his |
19 | grandson Scott serves today as the Fire Chief. He also previously served as a Town Constable for |

1 | the Town of Exeter, and was a past member of the Rhode Island Coon Hunter’s Association, Hill |
2 | Tractor Pull Association and the SNEPTA Association; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Greene loved sports and was active in many sporting activities |
4 | throughout his life. He was a pitcher for his softball and baseball teams, drove a stock car at the |
5 | Kingston Fair, and was one of the founders and Chairman of the Exeter Old Home Days, Inc. He |
6 | enjoyed nothing more than watching his grandson and great-grandson pulling his tractors and |
7 | trucks, and loved hunting at his camp in Guilford, Maine, where he spent many hunting seasons; |
8 | and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Greene leaves behind his children, Patricia Linear Gavitt Whitford and |
10 | her husband, Robert, Charles Greene, Jr., and Todd Greene. Her also leaves behind his |
11 | grandchildren, Theresa Gardiner, Scott Gavitt, and his wife, Laura, Kimberley Greene, Lisa Gaut, |
12 | Todd Greene, Jr., and his wife, Katie, and Kyle Greene, and his many step-grandchildren. He is |
13 | also survived by his great-grandchildren, Ashley Linear, Amber Mae, Isabella Rose, Scott David, |
14 | Jr., Kurt Russell, Zoie Elizabeth, and Zachary Mason, as well as his beloved grand-puppies, |
15 | Wheelin and Darla. He was predeceased by his son-in-law and good friend David Gavitt; now, |
16 | therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
18 | expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Charles Albert Greene; and be it further |
19 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
20 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Patricia Linear Gavitt Whitford, Charles Albert |
21 | Greene, Jr., and Todd Greene. |
