HONORING AND THANKING JOHN LANNI, ESQ., ON THE OCCASION OF HIS | |
RETIREMENT | |

1 | WHEREAS, Whether it is in the chamber or in the various offices that support the |
2 | legislative process, the extraordinary commitment of individuals who share their time, talents and |
3 | knowledge is one of the most valued assets for the General Assembly; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Upon graduation from North Providence High School, John Lanni attended |
5 | Providence College, earning his degree cum laude in Political Science. Continuing his education, |
6 | he received his Juris Doctor cum laude from Suffolk University Law School in 1984; and |
7 | WHEREAS, To the immense good fortune of the Rhode Island General Assembly, John |
8 | began his long and varied employment with the legislature in 1977. Multi-talented, he held |
9 | numerous positions including working as a part-time paralegal, head proofer, and staff attorney; |
10 | and |
11 | WHEREAS, On December 7, 1999, John became Legal Counsel in the Office of |
12 | Legislative Council. Although he has generally maintained an "under the radar" persona, his |
13 | expertise soon earned him myriad additional responsibilities as a Supervisor, Reviewer, and |
14 | Senior Staff Attorney. In addition to his long hours at the State House, he has also maintained a |
15 | private practice in the City of East Providence; and |
16 | WHEREAS, John’s longevity in Legislative Council has been an essential resource for |
17 | the General Assembly. His review and revision of bills to be introduced, and the guidance and |
18 | training he has provided to new lawyers has proven to be a beneficial and positive influence due |
19 | to the depth of his knowledge and legal acumen; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Throughout his years in Legislative Council, John’s amiable personality has |
2 | earned him the respect and friendship of staff and legislators alike. With self-effacing charm and |
3 | unabashed wit, he has not only been essential to the efficient operations of Legislative Council |
4 | but also to the morale and team spirit of the office during the often-long hours; and |
5 | WHEREAS, A consummate professional, John takes pride in his appearance, often |
6 | sporting monogramed dress shirts and snappy ties, although his overzealous visits to his hair |
7 | stylist have often resulted in disappointment from various members of staff; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The General Assembly, the Office of Legislative Council, and the people of |
9 | the State of Rhode Island have all benefitted from the extensive tenure and talents of John Lanni. |
10 | He is eminently worthy of our gratitude and admiration and his departure from the State House |
11 | will be keenly felt for many sessions to come; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
13 | recognizes and thanks John Lanni for his many years of dedicated service to the Office of |
14 | Legislative Council and the Rhode Island General Assembly and moreover wishes him the well- |
15 | earned time to spend with Pam at their beautiful and scenic home, play unlimited rounds of golf, |
16 | and cruise around in his Porsche convertible; and be it further |
17 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
18 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. John Lanni, Esq. |
