HONORING AND THANKING MAYOR ALLAN W. FUNG FOR HIS DEDICATED | |
SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF CRANSTON AND THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Born in the City of Providence, Allan W. Fung is the eldest child of Kwong |
2 | Wen and Tan Ping, Crown colony Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong. In 1969, his family |
3 | moved to Rhode Island and ran a small business on Cranston Street and Gansett Avenue in the |
4 | City of Cranston; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mayor Fung attended Classical High School, received his Bachelor's degree |
6 | from Rhode Island College, and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University. He subsequently |
7 | worked as a prosecutor for the state Attorney General's Office, and later served as a lobbyist for |
8 | MetLife; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 2002, the Honorable Allan Fung began his political career when he was |
10 | successfully elected to the Cranston City Council where he served for two terms; and |
11 | WHEREAS, On January 5, 2009, the Honorable Allan Fung was sworn in as Mayor of |
12 | the City of Cranston, and was the first Asian-American Mayor in Rhode Island history. Cranston |
13 | is the second largest City in Rhode Island and has a population of more than 81,000 residents. He |
14 | was re-elected four times as Mayor; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Under Mayor Fung's leadership, Cranston became one of the "Top 50 Cities |
16 | to Live in America" for three years in a row, and was also named one of the "Top 100 Best Cities |
17 | to Raise A Child" in 2017. In 2004, he was honored as a Rhode Island Bar Foundation Fellow. He |
18 | was also honored by Providence Business News as a "40 Under Forty honoree" and received the |
19 | Classical High School "Distinguished Alumni Award" in 2009; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Serving the community in myriad capacities, Mayor Fung has also been |
2 | Chair of the Rhode Island Governor's Insurance Council from 2005 to 2008, and is a council |
3 | member for the Republican National Committee's Asian Pacific American Advisory Council; and |
4 | WHEREAS, At the 2012, at the Republican National Convention, Mayor Fung met the |
5 | love of his life and future bride, Barbara Ann Fenton, a physical therapist. They married in the |
6 | summer 2016; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Through Mayor Fung's commitment, sound fiscal initiatives, and economic |
8 | development, the City of Cranston is thriving and his accomplishments are worthy of our |
9 | gratitude and recognition; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
11 | honors and thanks Mayor Allan Fung for his dedicated service to the people of the City of |
12 | Cranston and the State of Rhode Island. We moreover wish him good health, happiness, and |
13 | much success in all his future endeavors; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
15 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Allan W. Fung. |
