RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES -- REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES

     Introduced By: Representatives Phillips, Caldwell, Noret, O'Brien, Serpa, Hawkins, and

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 31-3 of the General Laws entitled "Registration of Vehicles" is

hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     31-3-6.4. Suspension of registration for failing to secure payment of workers'

compensation.

     Upon receiving notice from the department of labor and training that a motor carrier has

failed to secure workers' compensation insurance as required under chapters 29 through 37 of title

28, the division of motor vehicles may suspend the registration privileges of such motor carrier.

Any registration privileges suspended under this section shall not be reinstated until the division of

motor vehicles receives notification from the department of labor and training that the motor carrier

has secured workers' compensation insurance as required and the motor carrier pays the appropriate

reinstatement fee to the division of motor vehicles.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect on January 1, 2022.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would permit the division of motor vehicles to suspend the registration privileges

of motor carriers upon receipt of notice from the department of labor and training that the motor

carrier has not secured workers' compensation insurance as required by chapters 29 through 37 of

title 28.

     This act would take effect on January 1, 2022.
