RECOGNIZING SOCORRO GOMEZ-POTTER FOR HER OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN | |

PUBLIC EDUCATION | |

     WHEREAS, Since taking the helm as Principal of the Reservoir Avenue Elementary |
|

School eight years ago, Socorro Gomez-Potter has inspired her staff and the school’s students to |
|
1-3 |
envision their possibilities and to believe that they can build a future full of promise; and |
|
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Socorro Gomez-Potter was born in Jalisco, Mexico. As a young child, she |
|
1-5 |
emigrated from her homeland and attended elementary school through post graduate studies in |
|
1-6 |
the State of California while toiling as a migrant worker in the grape fields; and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, Credited with many admirable “firsts,” Ms. Gomez-Potter was the first |
|
1-8 |
Latina from her community to graduate from college and she was the first Mexican teacher hired |
|
1-9 |
at her former elementary school; and |
|
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, In 1995, Ms. Gomez-Potter moved to Rhode Island and was hired as the |
|
1-11 |
Assistant Principal at Roger Williams Middle School. In 1997, she became the Principal of Alfred |
|
1-12 |
Lima School and seven years later, she was named Principal of the Reservoir Avenue Elementary |
|
1-13 |
School, a position she has held for the past eight years; and |
|
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, During her tenure at the Reservoir Avenue Elementary School, Principal |
|
1-15 |
Gomez-Potter has been a true and proven champion of education and she is a tremendous asset to |
|
1-16 |
both the school and the community. She not only actively engages her students, but also their |
|
1-17 |
families by organizing and promoting school events, community involvement, and family |
|
1-18 |
leadership; and |
|
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, For the past seven years, the school has earned consistent Adequate Yearly |
|
1-20 |
Progress reports and the school’s students have distinguished themselves in myriad areas of the |
|
2-1 |
NECAP. In addition, two years ago, Reservoir Avenue Elementary was one of two schools in the |
|
2-2 |
state to attain the greatest gains in Reading and Science performance. This year, the school is top- |
|
2-3 |
ranked among all Providence Schools; and |
|
2-4 |
     WHEREAS, Principal Gomez-Potter is a paradigm of the very best leadership qualities. |
|
2-5 |
Her genuine love of learning has already helped hundreds of children to succeed and she is |
|
2-6 |
eminently worthy of our praise and acknowledgement; now, therefore be it |
|
2-7 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-8 |
hereby recognizes and applauds Principal Gomez-Potter for her outstanding leadership and |
|
2-9 |
dedication to the students of the Reservoir Avenue Elementary School. We wish her the very |
|
2-10 |
best of health, happiness, and success in all her future endeavors; and be it further |
|
2-11 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-12 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Socorro Gomez-Potter. |
