S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N | |
CONGRATULATING THE EAST GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT UNIFY TEAM
ON WINNING A GOLD MEDAL AT THE 2013 USA VOLLEYBALL OPEN NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP | |
|
      |
|
      |
Introduced By: Senators Hodgson, Metts, P Fogarty, Satchell, and Pearson
     Date Introduced: June 11, 2013
Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration
1-1 |
WHEREAS, The East Greenwich Unified Volleyball Team, winner of the Gold Medal at |
1-2 |
the 2013 USA Volleyball Open National Championship, was invited to compete again this year |
1-3 |
after compiling an outstanding fall campaign and winning the Rhode Island State Unify |
1-4 |
Volleyball Championship; and |
1-5 |
WHEREAS, The East Greenwich Unified team committed to attending three practices a |
1-6 |
week with the Rhode Island Adult Unified Program at Johnson and Wales University and |
1-7 |
attended numerous fundraisers to support the trip; and |
1-8 |
WHEREAS, Unified athletics pairs students with special needs with volunteer students |

who practice together and work hard to build camaraderie, develop social skills and leadership |

skills, forge bonds that will last a lifetime and, most importantly, work together to compete |
1-11 |
vigorously in an athletic endeavor and strive mightily to win games and championships; and |
1-12 |
WHEREAS, The East Greenwich team started off on fire at the National Championships |
1-13 |

1-14 |
day of competition. The Semi-finals also went East Greenwich's way as it defeated North |
1-15 |
Carolina for a second time. One often learns the most about a team when it faces adversity and |
1-16 |
East Greenwich faced adversity on the court after being dominated by Arizona in the first set of |
1-17 |
the championship match. However, East Greenwich overcame its nervousness early in the match |
1-18 |
and exhibited the poise and grit of a true champion as it came back to sweep the last two matches |
1-19 |
and repeat as national champions; and |
2-20 |
WHEREAS, Winning a championship in a team sport requires lots of sacrifice, hard |
2-21 |
work, and complete dedication to the concept that the team comes before any individual desires. |
2-22 |
The East Greenwich team exhibited these traits in abundance all year by every member, including |
2-23 |
Tessa Egan, Maggie Mathieu, Kim Whittaker, Connor Finn, Brandon Eckles, Liam Shaughnessy, |
2-24 |
Michael Carne, Matthew Cruise, Chris Colgan, Patrick Quinn, Jon-Erik Hurtubise, and Matthew |
2-25 |
De Luca. The East Greenwich Unified Volleyball Team was also blessed to be led by the |

outstanding coaching and leadership provided by Patty Carosotto, Dave Egan, and Casie Rhodes, |
2-27 |
as well as the support provided by Athletic Director Chris Cobain; now, therefore be it |
2-28 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-29 |
