|
COMMEMORATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF TRINITY | |

REPERTORY COMPANY | |

     WHEREAS, Recognizing the important relationship among the arts, our quality of life, |
|

and a thriving state economy is an essential element in humanity's vast effort to develop and |
|
1-3 |
expand our culture for future generations; and |
|
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Fifty years ago on March 21st of 1963, a group of forward-thinking |
|
1-5 |
individuals in our state founded a nonprofit regional theater, "The Foundation for Repertory |
|
1-6 |
Theater of Rhode Island, Inc.," now known as the Trinity Repertory Company or Trinity Rep, on |
|
1-7 |
the premise of "local art by local artists for local audiences"; and |
|
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, While long-recognized locally as a theatrical treasure, Trinity Rep's stellar |
|
1-9 |
reputation has spread far beyond Rhode Island's borders, earning it the distinction of being one of |
|
1-10 |
the most highly-respected regional theaters in the country; and |
|
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Over the ensuing years since its founding, Trinity Rep has not only become |
|
1-12 |
a creative and socially important setting for theater and the arts, but has also produced significant |
|
1-13 |
and ongoing economic benefits to our state; and |
|
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, Trinity Rep presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic |
|
1-15 |
work and is an educational resource for tens of thousands of Rhode Island's students each year. |
|
1-16 |
In addition, it is a cultural leader and incubator for other local theater companies, as well as a |
|
1-17 |
material resource for the production of theater across the state; and |
|
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, As Oscar Wilde eloquently stated, "I regard the theatre as the greatest of all |
|
1-19 |
art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of |
|
1-20 |
what it is to be a human being"; now, therefore be it |
|

     RESOLVED, That this General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence |
|
2-2 |
Plantations hereby commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Trinity Repertory |
|
2-3 |
Company and congratulates and applauds the management, staff, actors, artists, and loyal fans |
|
2-4 |
who have made Trinity Rep a must-see Rhode Island destination for the past five decades; and be |
|
2-5 |
it further |
|
2-6 |
     RESOLVED, That this Assembly hereby declares Trinity Repertory Company to be the |
|
2-7 |
State Theater of Rhode Island and encourages all the people of the state to patronize and enjoy |
|
2-8 |
the talents, diversity, and enchantment of an evening or matinee at Trinity Rep; and be it further |
|
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-10 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Trinity Repertory Company. |
