PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF APRIL 21-27, 2013, AS THE "GENERAL FEDERATION | |
OF WOMEN'S CLUBS - CRANSTON COMMUNITY WOMEN'S CLUB VOLUNTEERS IN | |
ACTION WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, Founded in April of 1890 and chartered by the United States Congress in |
1-2 |
1901, the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is one of the oldest nonpartisan, |
1-3 |
nondenominational women's volunteer service organizations in the world; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, The GFWC is dedicated to "community improvement by enhancing the |
1-5 |
lives of others through volunteer service"; and |
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, GFWC has enriched and expanded the voice and role of women on almost |
1-7 |
every issue of historic importance. Whether in the arts and conservation, or education and |
1-8 |
international affairs, the GFWC has helped women to attain a distinguished record of community |
1-9 |
commitment, contributions, and service; and |
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, Internationally, GFWC members in past years have contributed nearly $32 |
1-11 |
million and have volunteered over 8.4 million hours through more than 230,000 club projects to |
1-12 |
produce immense improvements in their communities; and |
1-13 |
     WHEREAS, Currently, Rhode Island has 10 women's clubs across the state, all working |
1-14 |
on local club projects for the betterment and enrichment of our Ocean State; and |
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, The dedicated leadership of local volunteers like the late Ethel J. |
1-16 |
Dellasandro, who served as President of GFCW-Cranston Community Women's Club and past |
1-17 |
Junior Director Executive Board of GFCW-RI, has allowed local GFCW clubs to thrive; now, |
1-18 |
therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-20 |
hereby proclaims the week of April 21-27, 2013, to be "General Federation of Women's Clubs |
2-21 |
Cranston Community Women's Club Volunteers in Action Week" in the State of Rhode Island; |
2-22 |
and be it further |
2-23 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate recognizes and thanks the GFWC for more than a century |
2-24 |
of commitment to encouraging women "to improve their skills, expand their rights, and apply |
2-25 |
their abilities and special sensitivity to the problems of their communities and nations." We |
2-26 |
commemorate the work of Ethel J. Dellasandro and know that her efforts will inspire subsequent |
2-27 |
generations of women leaders in the State; and be it further |
2-28 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-29 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the General Federation of Women's Clubs |
2-30 |
