RELATING TO INSURANCE -- ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE POLICIES

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 27-18 of the General Laws entitled "Accident and Sickness

Insurance Policies" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     27-18-28.1. Alternative plans to be offered. -- For every qualified program and health

1-4

insurance plan offered through the Rhode Island health benefits exchange that includes coverage

1-5

for abortion services, the exchange shall also offer an alternative version of the program or plan

1-6

which does not provide coverage for abortion services. The cost or rate of each such alternative

1-7

program or plan shall be reduced so as to incorporate and reflect the elimination of such coverage

1-8

for abortion services. For purposes of this section, the term "abortion" shall have the same

1-9

meaning as set forth in chapter 23-4.7 ("Informed Consent for Abortion").

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would require that for every health insurance plan offered through the Rhode

Island health benefits exchange which includes coverage for abortion services, the exchange

would also offer an alternative version of the program or plan which does not provide coverage

2-4

for abortion services, the cost of which would reflect the elimination of such coverage.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
