RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THOMAS ALEXANDER SMITH UPON | |

ACHIEVING SCOUTING'S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE | |

     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has a long and impressive history of preparing |
|

young men to assume responsibility in their communities. The Boy Scouts of America is one of |
|
1-3 |
the largest youth organizations in the United States. The rank of Eagle Scout, which was first |
|
1-4 |
introduced in 1911, is the highest a young man can attain in the Boy Scouts, and the title of Eagle |
|
1-5 |
Scout is held for life; and |
|
1-6 |
     WHEREAS, Thomas Alexander Smith is a remarkable young man worthy of this |
|
1-7 |
prestigious achievement and his accomplishments are truly deserving of our recognition; and |
|
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Thomas has distinguished himself through his continued performance of |
|
1-9 |
active service in Scouting. He has demonstrated strong leadership abilities by serving as Troop |
|
1-10 |
Librarian, Troop Instructor, and Patrol Leader. He has exhibited a strong sense of duty, honor, |
|
1-11 |
and patriotism, making him a clear example of the best qualities of American youth; and |
|
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, Thomas Alexander Smith of Troop 1, Arnold Mills, Rhode Island, has |
|
1-13 |
completed the arduous and demanding requirements necessary to be awarded the rank of Eagle |
|
1-14 |
Scout. He has earned twenty-six merit badges, as well as the National Outdoor Award for |
|
1-15 |
Camping with Gold Segment, and the World Conservation Award. As the highlight of his |
|
1-16 |
scouting years and to complete the final step toward obtaining the rank of Eagle, Thomas |
|
1-17 |
planned, developed, and carried out an extensive Eagle Scout service project. His Eagle Project |
|
1-18 |
was to restore a historic section of the Old Diamond Hill Cemetery located in Cumberland, Rhode |
|
1-19 |
Island. His project included the relocation of a six-foot section of stone wall to create an |
|
1-20 |
accessible entrance, the removal of several bushes and overgrowth, and the clean-up of general |
|
2-1 |
debris and fallen limbs. Tom was also asked to install a thirty-six by forty-eight foot boundary |
|
2-2 |
fence around the perimeter. Funds for the project were donated by family and friends and services |
|
2-3 |
were discounted by a local hardware store. Thomas, fellow scouts, and countless volunteers |
|
2-4 |
devoted countless hours and an amazing amount of energy carrying out his project for the benefit |
|
2-5 |
of the community; and |
|
2-6 |
     WHEREAS, Thomas also finds the time and energy to be an exemplary student. His love |
|
2-7 |
for filmmaking has involved him in an array of school projects. He is also a member of the |
|
2-8 |
Lacrosse Team at school; and |
|
2-9 |
     WHEREAS, Currently a senior at Cumberland High School, Thomas plans to attend |
|
2-10 |
college after graduation and study either film production or script writing; and |
|
2-11 |
     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth and to |
|
2-12 |
celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Eagle Scout Thomas Alexander Smith |
|
2-13 |
exemplifies everything an Eagle Scout should be and all that we hope our children will grow to |
|
2-14 |
be; now, therefore be it |
|
2-15 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
2-16 |
Providence Plantations hereby honors Thomas Alexander Smith for all he has done to attain the |
|
2-17 |
rank of Eagle within the Boy Scouts of America; and be it further |
|
2-18 |
     RESOLVED, That this House hereby extends our deepest appreciation to Thomas for his |
|
2-19 |
untiring service to the community and for setting a high standard of commitment and dedication |
|
2-20 |
by which the youth of this great state may follow. We send our very best wishes to Thomas |
|
2-21 |
Alexander Smith and wish him good health and happiness in the months and years ahead; and be |
|
2-22 |
it further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-24 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Eagle Scout Thomas Alexander Smith. |
