CELEBRATING "NATIONAL HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH" | |

DURING THE MONTH OF MAY, 2013, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease (HD) is a hereditary and degenerative brain disorder |
|

for which there is currently no treatment or cure; and |
|

WHEREAS, Huntington's Disease slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to |
|
1-4 |
walk, talk, and reason; and |
|
1-5 |
WHEREAS, One out of every ten thousand Americans will be diagnosed with |
|
1-6 |
Huntington’s Disease, resulting in more than 30,000 people in the United States currently living |
|
1-7 |
with this disease; and |
|
1-8 |
WHEREAS, Children who have a parent diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease have a |
|
1-9 |
50/50 chance of inheriting the malady, which means at least 200,000 Americans are at risk of |
|
1-10 |
developing HD; and |
|
1-11 |
WHEREAS, Children who develop the juvenile form of Huntington’s Disease rarely live |
|
1-12 |
to adulthood; and |
|
1-13 |
WHEREAS, Eventually, every person afflicted by Huntington’s Disease will require full- |
|
1-14 |
time care; and |
|
1-15 |
WHEREAS, The goals of Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month are to raise public |
|
1-16 |
awareness and to educate all Rhode Islanders about Huntington’s Disease; now, therefore be it |
|
1-17 |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
1-18 |
Providence Plantations hereby fully endorses the month of May, 2013, as “National Huntington’s |
|
1-19 |
Disease Awareness Month” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
|
2-20 |
RESOLVED, That this House hereby commemorates the 22nd Anniversary of the |
|
2-21 |
signing of Federal Proclamation 6295, which designated the month of May in 1991 as National |
|
2-22 |
HD Awareness Month. We recognize Rhode Island’s chapter as New England’s second |
|
2-23 |
Huntington’s Disease Chapter. We further support the educational goals brought forth by this |
|
2-24 |
resolution and urge all the citizens of our state to wear the color blue to signify remembrance of |
|
2-25 |
Huntington’s Disease awareness; and be it further |
|
2-26 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-27 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island chapter of the Huntington’s |
|
2-28 |
Disease Society of America. |
