It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
|

     SECTION 1. Chapter 17-1 of the General Laws entitled "General Provisions" is hereby |
|

amended by adding thereto the following section: |
|
1-3 |
     17-1-11. Local terms of office. -- Commencing on January 1, 2017, notwithstanding any |
|
1-4 |
charter, ordinance, public or general law provision to the contrary, all terms of office for all city |
|
1-5 |
and town elected officials shall be four (4) years, unless the governing body of a municipality |
|
1-6 |
votes not to follow the mandatory four (4) year term for its local elected officials. |
|
1-7 |
     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
