CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING TED SZYMKOWICZ ON BEING INDUCTED | |
TO THE COVENTRY HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME | |

     WHEREAS, Ted Szymkowicz has made an unprecedented contribution to the athletics |

program at Coventry High School for over fifty years as a student athlete, teacher, and coach; and |

     WHEREAS, In 1955, Ted graduated from Coventry High School, where he played |
1-4 |
baseball and basketball for all four years. He led the state in scoring in basketball (class C). As a |
1-5 |
result of his hard work, he was selected as First Team player on the All-Kent County Basketball |
1-6 |
team and was named the 1955 Outstanding Basketball Player in Kent County. Ted also received |
1-7 |
similar awards in baseball. As a senior, he was awarded the Babe Ruth Sportsmen Award at |
1-8 |
Coventry High School; and |
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, Ted attended Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, where |
1-10 |
he continued his love of sports by playing baseball, basketball, and golf, and was selected as the |
1-11 |
Outstanding Athlete for 1958; and |
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, In 1962, Ted returned to Coventry High School as an educator, and went on |
1-13 |
to teach social studies and coach for thirty-four years, retiring in 1996. During that time he |
1-14 |
coached basketball as assistant and head coach for thirty-three years, winning Coventry’s only |
1-15 |
Suburban Division State Championship in 1979-80, and was awarded the Outstanding Coaches |
1-16 |
Award. Ted also coached golf, where he won the Western Division Championship in 1967 and |
1-17 |
1968; and |
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, Appointed Athletic Director in his last three years at CHS, Ted also served |
1-19 |
as a baseball umpire and as a high school and college soccer official. A member of NISOA for |
1-20 |
over forty years, Ted served as the state representative to the Northeast Soccer Officials |
2-1 |
Association for more than two decades; and |
2-2 |
     WHEREAS, Ted was named Official of the Year and was presented with the David |
2-3 |
Steele Memorial Award in 2003. In 2008, he also received the Pard Picerce Award for baseball; |
2-4 |
and |
2-5 |
     WHEREAS, Ted Szymkowicz has had a tremendous impact on generations of athletes at |
2-6 |
the high school and college level through his commitment to athletics and the youth of Coventry. |

His dedication to education, passion for sportsmanship, and willingness to volunteer his time and |
2-8 |
energy are truly inspirational; now, therefore be it |
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2-10 |
Providence Plantations hereby congratulates and commends Ted Szymkowicz on his induction to |
2-11 |
the Coventry High School Association Hall of Fame; and be it further |
2-12 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-13 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ted Szymkowicz. |
