DECLARING MARCH 13, 2013, AS "NO MORE DAY" IN THE | |

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island is home to an estimated 205,000 victims, both |
|
1-2 |
male and female, who, during their lifetimes, experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking |
|
1-3 |
by an intimate partner; and |
|
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, Domestic violence in Rhode Island poses a major public health crisis, not |
|
1-5 |
only for the significant others who fall victim to these horrific acts, but also for the children who |
|
1-6 |
suffer through the experience; and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, In 2011, Rhode Island police officers responded to 7,883 domestic violence |
|
1-8 |
related calls, and children were present in almost 2,100 of these incidents; and |
|
1-9 |
     WHEREAS, All too often, there are many more of these heinous crimes that don't get |
|
1-10 |
reported because of victims' fear, a threat from the guilty spouse, or, in some cases, because of |
|
1-11 |
death resulting from the crime; and |
|
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, "NO MORE Day" serves as a symbol of commitment to ending domestic |
|
1-13 |
violence and sexual assault in Rhode Island and across the nation; and |
|
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, "NO MORE Day" will also serve as a national symbol to bring awareness to |
|
1-15 |
issues of domestic violence and sexual assault that all too often get overlooked; now, therefore be |
|
1-16 |

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
1-18 |
Providence Plantations hereby recognizes March 13, 2013, as "NO MORE Day," a day that will |
|
1-19 |
be known as the nation's call to end domestic violence and sexual assault; and be it further |
|
2-20 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-21 |
submit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic |
|
2-22 |
Violence. |
