PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 24TH THROUGH MARCH 2ND, 2013, AS PEACE CORPS | |
WEEK IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, The Peace Corps is an organization guided by committed individuals who |

provide their leadership and support and, like volunteers, have the same spirit of dedication to the |
1-3 |
work of the agency; and |
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then-Senator |
1-5 |
John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the |
1-6 |
cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an |
1-7 |
agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship; and |
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, Since that time, more than 210,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in |
1-9 |
139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and |
1-10 |
environmental preservation; and |
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, contributing to emerging and |
1-12 |
essential areas such as information technology, business development, and the President's |
1-13 |
Emergency Plan for AIDS relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals |
1-14 |
who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities; now, |
1-15 |
therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
1-17 |
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims February 24th through March 2nd as "Peace Corps Week" |
1-18 |
in the State of Rhode Island. We commend the Peace Corps and all those who have served as |
1-19 |
Peace Corps volunteers for the great contributions they have made to world peace and |
1-20 |
understanding, for the betterment of the lives of the citizens of the countries where volunteers |
2-1 |
have served and of our own nation; and be it further |
2-2 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-3 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to acting director of the Peace Corps, Carrie |
2-4 |
Hessler-Radelet. |
