HONORING BRUCE MCINTYRE FOR HIS HEROIC ACTIONS
Introduced By: Senators Paiva Weed, Tassoni, and DeVall
     Date Introduced: June 12, 2012
Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration
1-1 |
WHEREAS, Although the afternoon of Saturday, June 2, 2012, was not a propitious one |
1-2 |
for the Dream Catcher, the vessel’s two crew members, Gary Wallace, 50, and Tyler Corbitt, 53, |
1-3 |
both of Florida, had the good fortune to be located off the coast of Jamestown Island when their |
1-4 |
32-foot Blackfin fishing boat succumbed to the angry waters; and |
1-5 |
WHEREAS, The 12-foot waves and roaring winds challenged a rescue attempt of a 6- |
1-6 |
man Coast Guard team that was trying valiantly to extract the two crew members from the Dream |
1-7 |
Catcher. As the Coast Guard boat circled the insecurely anchored Dream Catcher, one man |
1-8 |
attempted to jump to safety, only to be thrown into the churning maelstrom; and |
1-9 |
WHEREAS, Jamestown resident Bruce McIntyre, who was out walking his dog on the |
1-10 |
shore and witnessed the horrific episode as it unfolded before his eyes, sprang into action. |
1-11 |
Without concern for his own safety, he ran down to an outcropping of rocks and pulled the man |
1-12 |
free from their sharp edges and the dangerous waves; and |
1-13 |
WHEREAS, It is a rare person who will deliberately put himself into harm’s way. Bruce |
1-14 |
McIntyre has demonstrated through his actions and his instantaneous response that he is a true |
1-15 |
hero who simply cannot stand still when others face peril. He has earned our admiration and |
1-16 |
praise, and we thank him for making Rhode Island a safer place for friends and strangers alike; |
1-17 |
now, therefore be it |
1-18 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
1-19 |
hereby recognizes and applauds Bruce McIntyre, an extraordinarily heroic individual and a |
1-20 |
person eminently worthy of our emulation and acknowledgement; and be it further |
2-1 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-2 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Bruce McIntyre. |
