S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING JOSEPH A. DOORLEY, JR., FOR HIS SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO

THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE AND THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Joe Doorley was born and raised in a working-class neighborhood in the

City of Providence. Early on, he understood the importance of education. After graduating from

1-3

LaSalle Academy, he attended Notre Dame, where he earned his degree cum laude. He later

1-4

attained his Juris Doctor from Boston College, taking courses at night while working a full-time

1-5

job teaching; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, After laying the foundation for a future that was filled with promise and

1-7

potential, Joe opened a law practice with fellow lawyer, Frank McGee. Soon thereafter, feeling

1-8

the pull of politics and public service, Joe joined the staff of the newly elected Governor, John

1-9

Notte; and   

1-10

     WHEREAS, Joe’s success wasn’t simply a result of good fortune, but was due in great

1-11

measure to his intelligence, his loyalty and honor, and his amazing determination. In 1960, he

1-12

became a member of the Democratic City Committee, and in 1962, ran successfully for a City of

1-13

Providence Council seat; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, In 1964, at the age of thirty-four, Joe Doorley became the then-youngest

1-15

man elected Mayor of the City of Providence. He easily won a second term in office in 1966 and

1-16

again in 1970; and 

1-17

     WHEREAS, During his tenure in office, Joe was credited with implementing programs

1-18

and procedures that tightened the city’s bottom line, turned around the city’s population decline

1-19

and resultant economic losses, set the stage for recovery and renewal, and earned him the

1-20

appreciative title of “No Dough Joe”; and

     WHEREAS, June 11th is officially being designated as “Joe Doorley Day” in the City of

2-2

Providence. In addition, the city is dedicating the Mayor Joseph A. Doorley, Jr., Municipal

2-3

Building in his honor. These fitting tributes will serve as permanent reminders of Joe’s spirit of

2-4

community and the myriad contributions he has made to the betterment of our capital city; and  

2-5

     WHEREAS, Joe Doorley has had a significant impact and achieved successes that very

2-6

few people would have even dared to imagine, and the Ocean State is proud to honor his

2-7

triumphs; now, therefore be it

2-8

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-9

hereby congratulates and applauds The Honorable Joseph Doorley, Jr. We can think of no one

2-10

who is more deserving of these honors and distinction than Joe, and we wish him the very best of

2-11

health, happiness, and continued success; and be it further

2-12

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-13

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Honorable Joseph A. Doorley, Jr.
