|
HONORING AND CONGRATULATING THE YOUNG PANNESE SOCIAL CLUB OF | |
|
PROVIDENCE ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY | |
|
|

     WHEREAS, The Italian diaspora of the late 1800s and early 1900s brought many Italian |
|
1-2 |
immigrants to America’s shores. They came in search of a better life for themselves and their |
|
1-3 |
children and they were willing to work tirelessly to accomplish their goals; and |
|
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, On Federal Hill in the City of Providence, a small colony developed as |
|
1-5 |
immigrants from the little village of Panni, Italy, arrived in the area. One of the first settlers from |
|
1-6 |
Panni was Giuseppe Anzenvino, who arrived in 1885; and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, While proud of their new homeland, members of the little enclave never |
|
1-8 |
forgot their motherland and remained faithful to their patron “St. Mary of the Woods.” In 1909, |
|
1-9 |
they formed the "Pannese Society" a solidarity of mutual aid, brotherhood, and shared heritage; |
|
1-10 |
and |
|
1-11 |
     WHEREAS, In 1912, six of the original members formed the Young Pannese Social |
|
1-12 |
Club. Today, the club is flourishing with a roster of over 100 members that span three |
|
1-13 |
generations; and |
|
1-14 |
     WHEREAS, The club continues its 100-year-old tradition of socializing and helping |
|
1-15 |
others, and through donations and the dedicated efforts of its membership, the club was able to |
|
1-16 |
purchase its own building in the Silver Lake section of Providence, which serves as its new |
|
1-17 |
headquarters and meeting place; and |
|
1-18 |
     WHEREAS, The Young Pannese Social Club also continues to make substantial |
|
1-19 |
contributions to all aspects of the local community, taking part in church feasts, supporting youth |
|
1-20 |
athletic teams, and holding a panoply of functions and activities; and |
|
2-1 |
     WHEREAS, The Women's Auxiliary has raised funds for the Muscular Dystrophy |
|
2-2 |
Association, Meeting Street School, the Jimmy Fund, and many other community organizations, |
|
2-3 |
as well as held Thanksgiving clothing and fruit basket drives for needy area families; and |
|
2-4 |
     WHEREAS, The Young Pannese Social Club has earned the unqualified admiration and |
|
2-5 |
gratitude of the Providence community, and its accomplishments and contributions to our state |
|
2-6 |
over the past century are eminently worthy of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it |
|
2-7 |
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-8 |
hereby congratulates the Young Pannese Social Club on the occasion of its Centennial |
|
2-9 |
Celebration. Sure in the knowledge that they will continue to enrich the fine blend of cultures that |
|
2-10 |
has made our Ocean State inimitable, we recognize the entire club’s membership for their |
|
2-11 |
dedicated service to the community; and be it further |
|
2-12 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-13 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Edward Generali, President of the Young |
|
2-14 |
Pannese Social Club of Providence, Rhode Island. |
