     Date Introduced: April 26, 2012
Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration
1-1 |
WHEREAS, Each day, police officers go to work with the full knowledge that they may |
1-2 |
be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as they perform their duties. They demonstrate their |
1-3 |
courage, tenacity, and commitment to making their surroundings safe, never knowing in advance |
1-4 |
if they will emerge unscathed after putting themselves in harm’s way; and |
1-5 |
WHEREAS, It is with deepest regret and profound sadness that we must accept the |
1-6 |
passing of Providence Police Sergeant Maxwell Dorley, who was killed in the line of duty on |
1-7 |
Thursday, April 19, 2012; and |
1-8 |
WHEREAS, Sergeant Dorley left his homeland of Liberia as a child. He became drawn |
1-9 |
to a profession dedicated to ensuring that when wrong is done, justice is served. It was this same |
1-10 |
intense sense of righteousness that compelled him to return recently to his war-torn homeland and |
1-11 |
bring supplies that could improve the lives and safety of those living there; and |
1-12 |
WHEREAS, During Seargent Dorley’s fifteen-year career as a Providence Police Officer, |
1-13 |
he was known as a man who was deeply devoted to his family, friends, and colleagues. Over the |
1-14 |
years, his abilities, accomplishments, and leadership were recognized through twelve citations |
1-15 |
and numerous letters of recommendation; and |
1-16 |
WHEREAS, Sergeant Dorley’s hard work, dedication, and most importantly, his |
1-17 |
friendship, made his job and the lives of his family, friends, and co-workers more meaningful; |
1-18 |
and |
1-19 |
WHEREAS, Sergeant Dorley dared to exert his energies every day to make Providence a |
1-20 |
better place by defending the vulnerable, safeguarding neighborhoods, preserving justice, and |
2-1 |
supporting his fellow police officers. His sacrifice reminds us that we must never take our safety |
2-2 |
for granted; and |
2-3 |
WHEREAS, A loving husband, dedicated father of two children, supportive friend, |
2-4 |
partner, and true professional, Sergeant Dorley leaves an example that inspires entire |
2-5 |
communities throughout the state. He is a hero not because of how he died, but because of how he |
2-6 |
chose to live his life in unselfish service to others. He will be sorely missed; now, therefore be it |
2-7 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-8 |

2-9 |
a difference in this world; and be it further |
2-10 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
2-11 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sergeant Dorley’s wife, Mrs. Kou Dorley, and |
2-12 |
their two children, Amanda and Robert. |
