WHEREAS, Originally founded in 1958 as America's Junior Miss program in Mobile, |
|

Alabama, Distinguished Young Women is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for |
|

high school girls; and |
|

WHEREAS, While fulfilling its mission to positively impact the lives of young women |
|
1-5 |
and provide a transformative experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership, and |
|
1-6 |
talent, Distinguished Young Women has provided life-changing experiences for more than |
|
1-7 |
700,000 young women across the country and more than $93 million in cash scholarships at the |
|
1-8 |
local, state, and national levels; and |
|
1-9 |
WHEREAS, After a fierce competition among many worthy contenders from across the |
|
1-10 |
state, Chandler Cross emerged as the state’s Distinguished Young Woman of Rhode Island for |
|
1-11 |
2012; and |
|
1-12 |
WHEREAS, While attending Mount St. Charles Academy, Chandler’s exemplary |
|
1-13 |
academic abilities propelled her to membership in the National Honor Society and the Excelsior |
|
1-14 |
Honor Roll, and combined with an innate artistic talent that was recognized with the Motif |
|
1-15 |
Nomination for Best Lead Actress. These multiple dimensions of talent and abilities formed an |
|
1-16 |
irresistible package for the judges of the competition; and |
|
1-17 |
WHEREAS, Chandler will spend the next year as an ambassador for Distinguished |
|
1-18 |
Young Women and Rhode Island, attending events and serving as a role model to young people |
|
1-19 |
by spreading the program’s national outreach message of “Be Your Best Self”; now, therefore be |
|

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|

hereby honors Chandler Cross, an exceptional young woman who is truly deserving of being |
|
2-3 |
named Distinguished Young Woman of Rhode Island for 2012, and wishes her the best of luck at |
|
2-4 |
the National Finals as she competes for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of America of |
|
2-5 |
2012; and be it further |

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-7 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Miss Chandler Cross. |
