RELATING TO LIBRARIES -- OFFICE OF STATE LIBRARY AND INFORMATION

SERVICES

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 29-3.1 of the General Laws entitled "Office of State Library and

Information Services" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     29-3.1-14. Library assistance grants. – (a) Subject to availability of appropriations from

the legislature, the chief of library services upon the recommendation of the library board of

1-5

Rhode Island shall provide library assistance grants to assist in funding library operations,

1-6

enhancing library collections and interlibrary cooperation (including offsetting the costs of

1-7

loaning library materials to other libraries in Rhode Island for use by Rhode Island residents or

1-8

students).

     (b) The library board shall develop a formula for eligibility determination and distribution

1-10

of library assistance grants based in part on participation in interlibrary cooperation.

1-11

     (c) The library board shall develop procedures for application for library assistance grants

1-12

and distribute information relating to said grants to all eligible libraries.

1-13

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
