EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF PEDRO M. CANO | |

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Pedro |
|

M. Cano, a resident and well-respected citizen of the City of Providence; and |
|

WHEREAS, Born in Bolivar Antioquia, Colombia, Pedro was the son of the late Antonio |
|
1-4 |
and Adelina (Sanchez) Cano and the beloved husband of Carlina Cano. Known as “Papito” to his |
|
1-5 |
family, he was the loving father of Marina Alvarez, Alba Luz Hinestroza, Olga Isaza, Martha |
|
1-6 |
Cano, Amparo Villanueva, Margarita Cano, Anna Cano-Morales, Rodrigo Cano, Humberto Cano, |
|
1-7 |
Juan G. Cano, Luis Cano, and the late Pedro Cano Jr, Orlando Cano, Fernando Cana, and Maria |

Elena Cana. Pedro was the proud grandfather of thirty-two grandchildren, thirty-one great |
|
1-9 |
grandchildren, and a great-great grandson; and |
|
1-10 |
WHEREAS, Recruited in the 1960s to work in a short-staffed mill, Pedro has been |
|
1-11 |
acknowledged as a pioneer in Rhode Island and as one of the first Latinos to move here for |
|
1-12 |
employment in what eventually became a booming textile industry; and |
|
1-13 |
WHEREAS, A hard working and industrious chief mechanic for over 70 years in the |
|
1-14 |
Textile Industry before retiring, Pedro had humble roots and trained at a technical school in |
|
1-15 |
Colombia as a machinist before moving to the United States, where his expertise at fixing looms |
|
1-16 |
sometimes had him working up to 12 hours daily at Lyons Fabric Company; and |
|
1-17 |
WHEREAS, With his efforts recruiting other workers from Colombia to the Blackstone |
|
1-18 |
Valley area, Pedro was instrumental in transforming Central Falls into an enclave for Latinos, a |
|
1-19 |
place where Latino culture and family have flourished; and |
|
1-20 |
WHEREAS, His accomplishments have caused the City of Providence to recognize |
|
1-21 |
Pedro M. Cano Day on August 19th, and his life and achievements were explored in the film |
|

“Telares,” a documentary that was made of his life in the textile industry; and |
|
2-2 |
WHEREAS, Even though we are diminished by this loss and mourn the passing of Pedro, |
|
2-3 |
so must we celebrate the charm, youthful spirit, kindness and elegance with which he lived every |
|
2-4 |
day of his life; now, therefore be it |
|

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-6 |
hereby expresses our deepest condolences on the passing of Pedro M. Cano; and be it further |
|
2-7 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-8 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Carlina Cano. |
