PROCLAIMING MAY 18TH OF 2012 TO BE "ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY" IN THE | |

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

     WHEREAS, A healthy environment is an integral part of Rhode Island’s economy, |
|

society, and culture; and |
|
1-3 |
     WHEREAS, For more than thirty years, the Endangered Species Act has served as the |
|
1-4 |
nation’s safety net for wildlife, saving hundreds of plants and animals from extinction, putting |
|
1-5 |
hundreds more on the path to recovery, and safeguarding the habitats on which they all depend; |
|
1-6 |
and |
|
1-7 |
     WHEREAS, Saving a species requires a combination of sound research, careful |
|
1-8 |
coordination, and intensive management of conservation efforts, along with increased public |
|
1-9 |
awareness and education; and |
|
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, Education and increasing public awareness are the first steps in effectively |
|
1-11 |
informing the public about endangered species and species restoration efforts; and |
|
1-12 |
     WHEREAS, Species extinction and habitat destruction are a serious threat to our own |
|
1-13 |
welfare, as nature is the source for most of our commonly-prescribed medicines, and the loss of |
|
1-14 |
species could mean the loss of life-saving drugs; and |
|
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, Protecting Rhode Island’s and America’s wildlife and plants today is the |
|
1-16 |
legacy we leave to our children and grandchildren. We have the responsibility of ensuring that |
|
1-17 |
future generations will not only have use of the best available science, but will also be able to |
|
1-18 |
delight in experiencing the rich variety of native species that have helped to define our Ocean |
|
1-19 |
State; now, therefore be it |
|
2-20 |
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
|
2-21 |
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 18th of 2012 to be “Endangered Species Day” in |
|
2-22 |
the State of Rhode Island. We furthermore urge the citizens of the state, both young and old, to |
|
2-23 |
learn about the importance of protecting endangered species and the everyday actions that people |
|
2-24 |
can take to help protect our nation’s disappearing wildlife and last remaining open spaces; and be |
|
2-25 |
it further |
|
2-26 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-27 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Tara Thornton, Northeastern Regional Director |
|
2-28 |
of the Endangered Species Coalition. |
