EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF

ALCIDE P. LAFLEUR

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House of Representatives has learned of the

passing of Alcide (Al) P. Lafleur, a decorated veteran and member of the “Greatest Generation,”

1-3

who left an indelible impression on everyone he met; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, The son of the late Alcide J. Lafleur and the late Roseanna Lafleur, Al

1-5

recently celebrated sixty-three years of devoted marriage to Delores G. (Levitre) Lafleur, and was

1-6

the loving father of Suzanne (Lafleur) Gazaille and her husband, Roland, Gerard Lafleur and his

1-7

wife, Sheryl, Dr. Richard Lafleur and his wife, Pamela and North Smithfield School Committee

1-8

Chairman Robert Lafleur. Al was the brother of Raymond Lafleur and the late Joseph R. A.

1-9

Lafleur, and the doting grandfather of ten grandchildren; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, Born in Woonsocket, Al was inducted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18

1-11

after attending Mt. St. Charles Academy. He served his country with distinction during World

1-12

War II as an infantryman with Company B, 14th Infantry, 71st Division, when he was immediately

1-13

immersed into the Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns, specializing as an anti-tank gunner;

1-14

and

1-15

     WHEREAS, A true American hero, Al was wounded during ferocious fighting near

1-16

Bayreuth, Germany, and awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal with two Bronze

1-17

Stars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal

1-18

for his brave and gallant service; and

1-19

     WHEREAS, Upon being honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal, Al returned

1-20

home to work for the Lonsdale Company and married the wonderful Delores G. (Levitre) Lafleur.

He then embarked on a thirty-five year career with the Star Market grocery chain, working as a

2-2

head meat cutter while also a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International

2-3

Union Local 328; and

2-4

     WHEREAS, A loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and the New England

2-5

Patriots, Al’s main passion was for North Smithfield Athletics, serving as a coach, manager, and

2-6

Secretary of the North Smithfield Little League, and a founding member of the original North

2-7

Smithfield Boosters Club, supportive of the High School athletic program, and cheering his

2-8

children and grandchildren throughout the many sports in which they participated; and

2-9

     WHEREAS, A passionate dog lover, Al took the opportunity to “dog sit” whenever

2-10

possible during his retirement, making sure all the family dogs were taken care of and tending to

2-11

his many canine companions: and

2-12

     WHEREAS, Al’s love of family and friends was well known, and his life and

2-13

achievements will live on for years to come in the memories of everyone fortunate enough to

2-14

have been touched by the quality of this remarkable gentleman; now, therefore be it

2-15

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-16

Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest condolences on the passing of Alcide P.

Lafleur and be it further

2-18

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-19

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Delores Lafleur and Family.
