RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES - BACKGROUND CHECKS

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 45-2 of the General Laws entitled "General Powers" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     45-2-3.4. Background checks. -- Notwithstanding any provision of the general or public

1-4

laws to the contrary, any volunteer fire department may request a background check from their

1-5

local police department as an initial condition of any volunteer applying to serve that department.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would authorize any volunteer fire department to request a background check

from their local police department as an initial condition of any volunteer applying to serve that

department.
