It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |

     SECTION 1. Section 31-23-38 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-23 entitled |
|

"Equipment and Accessories Generally" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
|
1-3 |
     31-23-38. Television receivers prohibited. -- (a) No television viewer, screen, or other |
|
1-4 |
means of visually receiving a television broadcast shall be located in the field of view of the |
|
1-5 |
operator of the motor vehicle. No video cassette player or digital video disk player, or other |
|
1-6 |
means of displaying recorded video images shall be located in the field of view of the operator of |
|
1-7 |
the motor vehicle; provided, however, that nothing herein shall be deemed to prohibit or restrict |
|
1-8 |
the ordinary and intended use of a factory-installed global positioning system. Any person who |
|
1-9 |
drives or causes to be driven any motor vehicle in violation of the provisions of this section shall |
|
1-10 |
be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars ($100). |
|
1-11 |
      (b) This section does not prohibit the use of an electronic display used exclusively for |
|
1-12 |
safety or in conjunction with a vehicle navigation system. |

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
