RELATING TO THE SALE OF CIGAR AND CIGARETTE LIGHTERS TO CHILDREN

UNDER THE AGE OF 18

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 11-9 of the General Laws entitled "Children" is hereby amended by

adding thereto the following section:

     11-9-20.1. Sale of cigar and cigarette lighters. -- (a) No person, firm or corporation

that owns, manages or operates a place of business including vending machines shall knowingly

sell, give or deliver any cigar or cigarette lighter to any child under the age of eighteen (18) years.

The owner, operator or manager of a place of business where cigar and cigarette lighters are sold

1-7

shall post a notice of this law conspicuously in such place of business in letters at least three-

1-8

eighths of an inch (3/8”) high. Signs required by this section may be provided by the department

1-9

of health at cost.

     (b) Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be fined one hundred dollars

1-11

($100) for each offense.

1-12

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would prohibit the sale of cigar and cigarette lighters to children under the age of
