HONORING THE DARLINGTON AMERICAN LITTLE LEAGUE ON THEIR 50TH

ANNIVERSARY

     WHEREAS, Baseball has often been described as America’s pastime. It is a game that

has endured for more than a century. The unmistakable sound of ball meeting bat, munching on a

1-3

box of popcorn and a hotdog, and watching a youngster play the game, are all part of the magic of

1-4

an afternoon at the ballpark; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, In 1952, a group of neighbors in Pawtucket got together and organized the

1-6

Darlington American Little League. Love for their children, love for the game, and a desire to

1-7

teach those lessons in life that are best learned through sportsmanship, a little healthy

1-8

competition, and teamwork, were their fundamental motivation; and

1-9

     WHEREAS, Over the past fifty years many championship teams have emerged in the

1-10

Darlington American Little League, eighteen District 2 Titles, four Rhode Island State

1-11

Championships in 1969, 1980, 1992 and 1993, and that remarkable 1980 season that took a team

1-12

of Darlington American youngsters all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport,

1-13

Pennsylvania; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Providing Rhode Island’s youth with wholesome and beneficial alternatives

1-15

at a time when too many of our children are tempted to selfish and unwise decisions, is crucial in

1-16

the development of tomorrow’s leaders and in securing Rhode Island’s future; now, therefore be

1-17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-19

hereby congratulates the Darlington American Little League on its 50th Anniversary and we

2-1

express our gratitude for providing our young men and women with memories and friendships

2-2

that will last a lifetime; and be it further

2-3

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

2-4

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Gary Trottier.
