WELCOMING THE LEGENDARY CAROL BURNETT TO THE STATE OF RHODE | |

     WHEREAS, Long considered a true living legend in entertainment, not only in America, |

but throughout the world, Carol Burnett has given each and every one of us here, moments of |

pause, moments of joy and hours of laughter; and |

     WHEREAS, Spending most of her childhood in a less than glamorous section of |
1-5 |
Hollywood, Miss Burnett attended UCLA before heading to New York. Early on, with jobs |
1-6 |
tough to find, the innovative Carol Burnett staged her own musical review, featuring her out-of- |
1-7 |
work roommates and unemployed writers and composers. Soon, offers for summer stock and 13 |
1-8 |
weeks' work on Paul Winchell's TV show followed. Shortly after, she was spotted by talent |
1-9 |
bookers from both "The Jack Paar Show" and "The Ed Sullivan Show". The now legendary |
1-10 |
rendition of "I Made A Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" was the beginning of America's |
1-11 |
relationship with Carol Burnett. Audiences were in love with the laughter, in love with Carol |

Burnett; and |

     WHEREAS, As the years passed, Carol Burnett juggled both Broadway and television. |

In 1967, Carol returned to Los Angeles to begin what would deservedly become the longest- |

running musical comedy variety show in television history, America's favorite, "The Carol |
1-16 |
Burnett Show"; and |
1-17 |
     WHEREAS, Throughout her career and even during "The Carol Burnett Show", Miss |
1-18 |
Burnett found the time to headline in Las Vegas, and star in numerous stage, film and television |
1-19 |
productions with the likes of Dick Van Dyke, Rock Hudson, Tony Bennett, Walter Matthau, Jack |

Lemmon, Julie Andrews, Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlton Heston, |

Cliff Robertson, and so many more people that have shaped the entertainment industry in our |

country; and |

     WHEREAS, Her loving memoir, One More Time, began as a letter to her daughters, a |
2-5 |
record of Carol's life and family history. This work was critically acclaimed, and reached the |
2-6 |
non-fiction best sellers list in 1986; and |
2-7 |
     WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's accomplishments have been recognized with numerous |
2-8 |
awards, including 6 Emmy Awards, 5 Golden Globes, the Peabody Award, the Ace Award, more |
2-9 |
People's Choice Awards than any other woman in history, a Best Actor Tony Award, and a |
2-10 |
Christopher Award to name a few. In recognition of the vast body of television accomplishments |

that Miss Burnett was responsible for, The National Association of Broadcasters inducted her into |
2-12 |
their prestigious Hall of Fame; and |
2-13 |
     WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's social and charitable endeavors are endless, including |
2-14 |
scholarships to UCLA, the University of Hawaii, Emerson College and The College of Santa Fe. |

She serves on the board of trustees at UCLA where she has established "The Carol Burnett |
2-16 |
Musical Theater Competition"; and |
2-17 |
     WHEREAS, Carol Burnett's last special, "The Carol Burnett Show: Show Stoppers" with |
2-18 |
Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence and Tim Conway, aired last November, attracted nearly 30 |
2-19 |
million viewers, giving CBS its most watched non-sports program in that time period since 1991; |
2-20 |
and |
2-21 |
     WHEREAS, Carol Burnett is an especially remarkable human being whose warmth and |
2-22 |
talent have lifted spirits, lightened loads, and just made life a little easier, and for this, we thank |
2-23 |
her; now, therefore be it |

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
2-25 |
hereby welcomes the unforgettable Carol Burnett to the Rhode Island State Senate and extends |
2-26 |
our heartfelt best wishes for her good health, continued success and much happiness; and be it |
2-27 |
further |

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to |
2-29 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Miss Carol Burnett. |
