SUPPORTING THE AQUIDNECK ISLAND PLANNING COMMISSION, WEST SIDE | |

MASTER PLAN PROJECT | |

     WHEREAS, The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission is a joint municipal planning |
|

commission established by Rhode Island General Laws Title 45, Chapter 22.1 to coordinate the |
|
1-3 |
discussion and exploration of important island-community-wide issues; and |
|
1-4 |
     WHEREAS, The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission has established the West Side |
|
1-5 |
Master Plan Task Force to develop a long-term, coordinated master plan for the West Side of |
|
1-6 |
Aquidneck Island extending from the Gateway Center in Newport, North to the Mount Hope |
|
1-7 |
Bridge and from Route 114 (West Main Road) West to the East Passage of Narragansett Bay; and |
|
1-8 |
     WHEREAS, The residents and workers of Aquidneck Island and the state will have the |
|
1-9 |
opportunity to guide the master planning process; and |
|
1-10 |
     WHEREAS, The West Side Master Plan Task Force will develop this master plan to |
|
1-11 |
enhance Naval Station Newport, plan for economic development that compliments surrounding |
|
1-12 |
land features, provide more active and passive recreation for community members, increase vistas |
|
1-13 |
and access on public properties along Narragansett Bay and achieve the Shared Island Vision by |
|
1-14 |
incorporating the four elements in the Master Plan; and |
|
1-15 |
     WHEREAS, It is in the best interest of the communities of Newport, Middletown, |
|
1-16 |
Portsmouth and Naval Station Newport to develop the West Side Master Plan together as one |
|
1-17 |
island community in order to foster and preserve the natural beauty and resources of the island; |
|
1-18 |
and |
|
1-19 |
     WHEREAS, It is the intent of the State of Rhode Island to recognize the achievements |
|

made by the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission to improve the quality of life for Aquidneck |
|
2-2 |
Islanders and to support the ongoing, long-term efforts to proactively plan for the future pressures |
|
2-3 |
of growth and tourism; now, therefore be it |
|
2-4 |
     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
2-5 |
hereby supports the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission and the West Side Master Plan Task |
|
2-6 |
Force; and be it further |
|
2-7 |
     RESOLVED, That the Rhode Island Senate requests grant funding from the United States |
|
2-8 |
government to accomplish the necessary planning process; and be it further |
|
2-9 |
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-10 |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Rhode Island’s Congressional Delegation, the |
|
2-11 |
Aquidneck Island Planning Commission, and the West Side Master Plan Task Force. |
